Disembarkation

Friday 12th December

The ship’s motors were very loud in the morning. I kept waking and then going back to sleep. Judith woke and looked at our course on the TV. It seemed to her that we made a very abrupt turn and went right round a small island, but when she looked on the map there was no island in sight. The Captain told us later that there had been sudden gusts of 60 to 70 mph winds, so the ship needed to stand off until the winds died down. The ship certainly had to work hard to dock. Judith and Jenny had already been told by the Navigator that we would use two tugs to get into position. Because of all this, we were at least an hour late docking.

Judith had opted for self-disembarkation. We finished breakfast about 8:30. We had not heard any announcement that we could leave, but I suggested that we check with the Purser. We were told we could go off straight away. No one else was even in sight. It was quite a long walk to where we could collect the car. However, a walk to a taxi would have been almost as long. Even if we’d put our suitcases into the usual system, we would still have had to drag them almost as far as we did. It was definitely win-win to disembark this way.

We had a good clear run. We followed signs to Winchester and London and took what may have been a slightly longer route around the outside of Southampton, but I think it was much easier. I was home by 10:30, though Judith still had another two hours to drive.
